This is with reference to protest activity started by young doctors association (YDA) Punjab at various fronts. Demands of Young Doctors Association seem absolutely right because they are poorly paid in our country. Although throughout the globe doctors are well paid, in our country no one is paying heed to the issue. Medical field is time taking and least profiting. Truly, there is irreparable gap between specialists and general medical officers. To reduce this gap, the government has to stop private practice of specialists. Honestly speaking, medical graduation requires six years including study years and manmade procrastination at medical colleges. Then doctor has to go through the process of house job for one year. Total time consumed becomes seven years. And age of the successful candidate reaches almost 26 years. Now it is clear that to become a doctor one has to spend a lot of time in preparation. After successful completion of house job, the doctor is given job as a medical officer with pay of Rs.25000. In this meager amount the doctor has to countenance parents and other family members. How sheer injustice it is that after having best education of 19 years one get salary lower than a peon at high and supreme courts. Surprisingly, our post graduation needs 5 years again. In post graduation, a trainee has to work for 36 hours with short intervals. Besides, trainee has to grapple with his course with hectic duties. The entire post graduation training period is under pressure due to study factor and fear of failure. No doubt, our specialists class is fully financed but why young doctors are being continuously ill-treated? Government should stop private practice of all doctors with sufficient pay. It will create harmonious and smooth relations between young and senior doctors. I request higher authorities to look into the matter and resolve it so that doctors may contribute in their field eagerly and enthusiastically. DR IRFAN ALMANI, Rawalpindi, February 18.
