MAILSI - Independent candidate Jahanzaib Khan Khitchi won the by-election to the Punjab Assembly constituency PP-239 held on Monday by getting 35,478 votes, according unofficial results. PPP candidate Imran Khan Khitchi got 18,481 votes and remained runner up while Touseef Ahmad Khan remained third with 15,319 votes.
Polling for the by-election to PP-238, which fell vacant with the death of PPP MPA Sardar Muhammad Kitchi, was held in peaceful manner. A total of 123 polling stations - 35 for male, 35 for female and 53 combined polling stations were established for 1,55,430 voters in the entire constituency.
The polling started one hour late from the scheduled time due to the non-availability of polling agents. There was no unpleasant incident happened except at polling station No-104 Gadaye Shah where a quarrel incident between female was reported. The PP-239 is consisted of 11 and half union councils, has 90,500 male and 64,930 female registered voters. The turnout remained about 35 percent. According to reports about 71,026 votes were cast out of total 1,55,430 votes in the constituency while 1,528 votes were rejected. Moreover, three candidates were in the run for the provincial assembly slot - from PPP Imran Khan Khichi, Independent Jahanzaib Khan Khichi and Independent Touseef Ahmad Khan Yousafzai. Vehari DCO Ahsan Bhutta and DPO Shakir Hussain Dawar visited various polling stations and expressed satisfaction over the arrangements. The district administration has enforced Section 144 for two days to ensure peace on the occasion.
After end of scheduled time, the votes were counted and unofficial results were declared.
Elaborated security measures were adopted at polling stations and a large number of police personnel were deployed to main law and order.
