RAWALPINDI - An election tribunal (ET) on Tuesday dismissed the election petition filed by PML-N candidate Malik Shakil Ahmed Awan against the results of NA-55 where Awami Muslim League (AML) President Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was declared returned candidate in general elections 2013.

The ET comprised of Wamiq Javed heard the petition for more than 21 months. Interestingly none of the applicant and respondent was present in the courtroom when the ET laid down its verdict.

According to details, Wamiq Javed announced its verdict in election petition filed by PML-N candidate Malik Shakil Ahmed Awan against its rival candidate Sheikh Rashid Ahmed accusing him of hiding assets. However, during trial, the applicant's counsel could not prove the allegations on which the ET discharged the election petition. During the trial, Muhammad Ilyas Sheikh represented the applicant Malik Shakil Ahmed Awan whereas Abdul Rashid Awan appeared before court on behalf of respondent Sheikh Rashid Ahmed.

On the other hand, the ET announcement broke out celebrations in Lal Haveli, Raja Bazaar where Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and his nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafique distributed sweets among the supporters and general public. The supporters chanted slogans in favour of AML President/MNA Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and against PML-N candidate Malik Shakil Ahmed Awan.

Meanwhile, Malik Shakil Ahmed Awan blasted ET for rejecting his election appeal against his political rival despite provision of all the substantial evidences. He said that he challenged Sheikh in ET for hiding his assets and provided ET with evidences. But the ET murdered the merit by announcing decision on favour of Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Malik Shakil vowed that he would knock the door of Supreme Court of Pakistan and would challenge the verdict of ET.
