ISLAMABAD Renowned sports expert, Zakir Hussain Syed has said that the change in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) might be fruitful for the game if a suitable person replaces Ijaz Butt. Talking to The Nation here Monday, he criticised the policies of the PCB and said the board had no strategy to overcome the challenges and enhance the standard of the game in the country. Our national team is performing like a domestic level unit, he viewed. He pointed out that batting was not mature. We had not a solitary batsmen who could face the kangaroos pacers bravely throughout the series that Pakistan lost 3-0 and missed a gold chance to register win in the Sydney Test. Our batsmen could not achieve 176 runs target, he lamented. Zakir, former Director General Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), further said that the fielding standard of the Pakistani players was below par during both the series against New Zealand and Australia. Even domestic level players do not drop simple catches even first-class matches, as our senior players dropped the chances against the best side of the world, he said. It is fair and square to say that wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal drops a couple of catches in each innings the whole team has to pay. We should search for the an alternative in wicketkeeping department. Team needs a professional wicketkeeper, who has safe hands behind the stumps. But, unfortunately, the board is not in any position to make a decision, he further said. Responding to a question he said that there was confusion regarding the decision making. This is not clear who forms the final eleven - the captain, manager or touring selection committee? When it was decided that Kamran will be dropped in the Hobart Test, his brother refused to play match by making fitness pretext. It means there is no control of board on the issues, Syed said. Zakir said that Mohammad Yousuf was defensive during the whole series against Australia. He also remained under pressure and he is not a suitable leader. He was lacking confidence and failed to inspire his side for a fight against the world champions, he viewed. Answering a question, regarding the role and strategy of the PCB, he said that the board should adopt a strong strategy to control the players. Shahid Afridi does not like to play Test cricket for Pakistan and he apologies for this but is busy playing cricket in Australia and South Africa. We should bound national players to prefer Pakistan, he viewed. At present, the board is looking so weak. Top officials should be sent back and replacements should be made by some competent person. If there is no competent enough person to replace Ijaz Butt, there is no point in making other useless changes in the PCB. The directors are pocketing mammoth salary packages but doing nothing in the board, he said. We should plan for the World Cup 2011 but the board officials are not concentrating on their real task. The Board had announced Younus Khan captain of the team till the World Cup but he has to struggle hard to get the berth in the Pakistan team. No one knows, What the PCB is going to do, he questioned.
