Islamabad - A public prosecutor yesterday sought time to argue before the Islamabad High Court in National Accountability Bureau petitions against acquittal of former President Asif Ali Zardari from the corruption references including SGS, Cotecna, Ursus tractors and ARY gold.

A division bench of IHC comprising Justice Noor-ul-Haq N Qureshi and Justice Athar Minallah conducted the hearing of the NAB’s petitions and granted time to the newly appointed prosecutor of the authority.

During the proceedings, the dual bench of IHC was informed that NAB has changed its prosecutor in the appeals and now Adnan Tahir would appear before the court instead of former prosecutor Chaudhary Riaz.

The new appointed prosecutor Adnan Tahir informed the court that he has been recently appointed as prosecutor in this matter by replacing the former prosecutor Chaudhary Riaz and he needed some time to get prepared in this case.

The court deferred the hearing in this matter and told NAB prosecutor, “You can avail the time limit as you wish but ask the previous prosecutor about the questions that we have been seeking answers.”

In a separate case, no proceedings could be held in the matter of model girl Ayyan Ali where customs authorities have challenged a trial court’s decision of handing over her passport to her.

A single bench of IHC comprising Justice Athar Minallah adjourned the hearing in this matter till January 25, as legal counsels from both sides did not appear before the court.

The Customs authorities had filed this petition through Farhat Nawaz Lodhi Advocate seeking to revoke the trial court’s November 25 decision regarding handing over of passport to Ayyan.

The authorities in its petition has adopted that the name of Ayyan is already paced on exist control list (ECL). Her passport is a proof in currency smuggling case and there were apprehensions that she could flee the country through illegal means.
