LAHORE - Policemen at a picket near China Chowk allegedly thrashed a civil judge and a lawyer on the pretext of vehicle search and locked them up in Race Course police station here on Saturday. Witnesses and police sources said the policemen deployed at the picket allegedly thrashed the civil judge and the lawyer when they refused to allow the police to search their vehicle. They said Civil Judge Ahmad Saeed Awan was going to court on his vehicle along with the lawyer - his brother - when the cops stopped them at the picket. They asked the car-riders to leave the vehicle to let them search it. The lawyer introduced himself and the judicial officer, Ahmad Saeed Awan, as civil judge but the cops insisted on searching the car. The lawyer and the policemen later exchanged hot words and also scuffled. As soon as the civil judge came out of the vehicle to intervene, the policemen also misbehaved with him. The victim lawyer offered strong resistance but to no avail as the assailant cops also called other police officials for help causing hours long traffic mess at the Lawrence Road. Later, the police took the civil judge and the lawyer to the Race Course police station. On the call of victim lawyer, scores of other lawyers also reached the police station and expressed their strong agitation for allegedly torturing their colleague and misbehaving with the civil judge. Superintendent Police (SP) Civil Lines Division Suhail Akhtar Sukhera, DSP Race Course and other senior police officers also reached the police station to resolve the issue. The angry lawyers asked the police officers to register a case against SHO Race Course Naveed Irshad and the other police officials involved in the incident. They chanted slogans against the police in presence of the senior police officers. The police later released the civil judge and the lawyer on the directions of senior police officers. The lawyers took the civil judge to the Session Court where they launched strong agitation in front of the Sessions Judge demanding exemplary action against the police officials involved in torturing the judicial officer and the lawyer. The lawyers on the call of Lahore Bar Association suspended work for hours in protest against the police aggression. On this, District and Sessions Judge called SSP Operations and directed him to register case against the police officials. According to police sources, a police constable, Maqsood Ahmad, who was also deployed at the picket filed an application with the Race Course police station for registration of a case in which he alleged that the lawyer and the judicial officer misbehaved with him when he asked them to let him search their car. SP Civil Lines Suhail Sukhera did not attend his cell phone when this scribe contacted repeatedly for comments.
