KARACHI - Defending champion Shabbir Iqbal shot one under par 71 for overall score of three under 141 at the end of second round of the 54 hole Chief of Naval Staff open golf to share top rung with Muhammad Munir and Muhammad Siddiq in Rs.2.5 million prize carrying championship here at rain saturated Karachi Golf Club on Saturday. Muhammad Munir who had recorded par score in the first round fired three under 69 in the second round. Muhammed Siddiq who had logged five under 67 the previous day returned two over 74 in the second round. With one day left in the championship the race for the coveted title has become a touch and go affair with any of the top three in a position to clinch the crown. Monsoon rains lashed the lush green fairways of the club in the morning making the fairways soggy and dull making playing conditions comparatively tougher than the first day when the conditions were dry. Players had to make extra effort to reach water saturated putting greens. Though the putting was tricky under the given weather conditions but still some of the players showed extraordinary skills to return with good scores. The best round of the day came from Naseer Khan who fired four under 68 to jointly placed in second position with Muhammad Nazeer and Muhammad Akber and Shahid Javed Khan .All of them finished the second round with overall score of one under 143. Local golfing star Ali Hai retained the lead in the amateur category of the contest despite hitting one over 73 in the second round for four under 140.He had scored five under 67 in the first round. His nearest rival Tariq Mahmood is seven strokes behind at 149 after he faltered to get five over 77 in the second round to his first round score of par 72. Among senior pros, Ghani Khan of Arabian Sea Country Club clinched the title of senior professional champion by playing a round of even par followed by Ghulam Nabi of Lahore Gymkhana with the score of 3 over par. At the end of second round of Pros/Amateurs, there will be a cut on professionals and Top forty and ties will advance for the final round on Sunday.
