ISLAMABAD - The UNHCR Hayatabad Voluntary Repatriation Centre (VRC) has been closed till further notice, the UN said here on Saturday. According to the official statement issued here on Saturday, the UNHCR-assisted voluntary repatriation of Afghans through Peshawar in North-West Frontier Province has been temporarily suspended due to operational reasons. An announcement will be made once repatriation through Hayatabad VRC is resumed. Although, it has been said that VRC has been closed citing operational reasons but some insiders have confided to TheNation that security issues were the major reason for the closure of Hayatabad VRC. After the gruesome killing of UNHCR official at Katcha Garhi Camp Peshawar on Thursday. , the Hayatabad Camp has been closed for an indefinite time period as a precautionary measure, with persistent threats of further attacks on the UN officials, TheNation was told. However, the voluntary return operation from Belali VRC in Balochistan would continue as usual.
