BEIJING - Five people drowned while attempting to rescue a woman who was trying to commit suicide in a river in northwest China, officials said.

The 19-year-old woman was drinking with colleagues by the river early Sunday when she jumped in, the government of Dunhuang city said on a social media account.

Her colleagues managed to rescue the woman, who was not named, but she jumped into the waters again. Four of the five workmaters were drowned as they came to her aid once more.

Officials in the city in the province of Gansu are investigating the incident, it added.

The woman succeeded in taking her own life. A passer-by who came to the aid of the people in the water was also drowned. The fifth colleague called for help from the shore. A waiter jumped into the water to try to save the victims and was also drowned, the report said. A special team has been set up by the city government to investigate the incident.
