Accused robbers thrash magistrate in courtroom

LAHORE Some six accused robbers abused and launched a physical attack on a judicial magistrate with sharp edge weapons inside the courtroom here Saturday afternoon, making a mockery of the 27,000-strong City Police that is never tired of its professional 'skills in dealing with the criminals. The assault came on Judicial Magistrate Kaleem Aslam Awan, in the District Courts in Lower Mall police precincts. The culprits even dragged the magistrate out of the washroom, where he had hidden himself in order to save his life, a court official said. As usual, the DIG Operations Ghulam Mahmood Dogar suspended six policemen on charges of facilitating the accused in arming themselves. The suspended police officers include: District Courts Bakhshi Khana In-charge Sub Inspector Muhammad Saleem, Gaard In-charge Muhammad Ashraf and constables Muhammad Akram, Zahid, Zaheerud Din and Zahoor Ahmed. Muhammad Asif, a subordinate of the PRO to DIG Operations, said about the aforementioned police officials that they were found being negligent and displayed quite unprofessional attitude. Constables Zaheerud Din and Zahoor Ahmed presented three accused namely Rehan Akram, Muhammad Naeem and Javed (held on charges of robbery 392 PPC) in court of magistrate Kaleem Aslam Awan. Minutes after they came out of the courtroom after hearing of their case, another party of accused namely Azam Shafih, Waqas and Aamir Riaz (held on charges of robbery 392 PPC) were brought to the court under the supervision of officers Muhammad Akram and Zahid. This second party attacked the first, an eyewitness Aleem Khan said. According to his account, the later party managed to overpower the first, which retreated to the courtroom of magistrate Kaleem Awan. Azam and his two other accomplices chased Rehan and Naeems party while the magistrate rushed to the washroom considering the fight as a charade to a pre-planned attack on his life, he added. Aamir Riaz and Azam had to be presented to the court of Justice Noor Muhammad Khan while their third accomplice Waqas was to be produced before Judicial Magistrate Ashfaq Ahmed. But the fight entirely changed the whole scenario. Azam and his accomplices strongly abused Magistrate Kaleem Awan besides issuing him life threats, another official of the court said, adding it seemed the policemen were watching a scene of TV drama being shot on the judicial magistrate. He further claimed district police personnel straightforwardly refused of control the criminals, saying that when the police officials who produced them in the court were keeping themselves off, why they should endanger their lives. He further said instead of discharging their duties, the policemen were enjoying cold drinks from nearby kiosks and busy in chat.The criminals showing sharp edge weapons to the magistrate threatened him of closing the chapter of his life, he said. It was after much drama has been played that the policemen apprehended the criminals and later an FIR was lodged against the aforesaid policemen on statement of Reader of the Court, Shafiq. The DIG Operations issued suspension orders of the policemen with immediate effect with further orders to SP Headquarters Romail Akram to complete inquiry within couple of days.
