KPK govt allocates over Rs1,417m for power generation: In order to complete the ongoing energy projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PTI-led government has allocated Rs1417.881 million for power generation while funds will also be spent to utilise alternative sources of energy.

The government intends to start work on 10MW solar power plants and to complete it in two and half years duration while another power plant of 50 MW would be installed after the completion of the first project. The government will also start work on pilot project of wind energy with capacity of 10MW.

Energy and Power Department through PHYDO is operating four hydropower projects in Malakand, Swabi and Chitral district. The total installed capacity of these Hydropower Projects is 105MW. These hydel electric stations are not only contributing to reduce loadshedding but also generating handsome amount of revenue of Rs2.5 billion for the province.

Besides the above completed hydropower projects, the government has signed a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ABD) for the development of hydropower potential in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Under this project, PHYDO is constructing two new projects having a total installed capacity of 20MW (17 MW Ranolia HPP Kohistan and 2.6MW Machai HP Mardan). These projects are under various stages of implementation and will be completed during 2014-15.  Under same loan feasibility studies of three sites were also carried out and based on these studies, PC-I for the Jabori HPP (7MW) and Mansehra Karora HPP (10MW) Shangla have been approved while PC-I for Koto HPP (31MW) Dir is pending for approval of ECNEC.

In order to attract private investment, the Energy and Power Department through PHYDO has also conducted pre-feasibility study of 10 raw sites in various districts of KPK and these sites are in process of development.

Other under construction projects which would start generation of power in next two to three years include Matiltan Hydro Power Project with total capacity 84MW, Dral Khwar Swat 36MW, Koto Hydro Power Project Dir 31MW, Karora Power Project Shangla with total capacity 10MW, Jabori HPP Mansehra 8MW, Lawi Hydro Power Project Chitral.

In addition to hydel power generation, the department is putting its effort for harnessing power generation through other resources and energy conservation. Keeping in view the available potential for Oil and Gas, Energy and Power Department will carry out feasibility study for construction of 200MW thermal power house in southern district of the province.

In order to harness the hydropower potential in province, the Energy and Power Department will initiate 2nd phase of feasibility study of potential sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during financial year 2013-14. In this phase, the feasibility study of three new sites will be started.  The potential of these three sites is about 956MW. These project include Torcap-Guddubar HPP Chitral 409MW, Kari-Muskhur HPP Chitral 446MW and Gabral-Kalam HPP Swat 101MW.

To enhance power generation, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will work on short, medium and long term projects, which will raise the capacity of PHYDO and Energy and Power Department to the highest level of excellence.
