People protested against the worst law and order and uncontrolled crimes including robberies, dacoities, murders, gambling and prostitution.

They took out a rally on the inter city roads and protested in front of the DPO Office. Later, the lawyers, journalists and representative of civil society also staged protest against the police.

Raza Qadri, Ali Waqas, Abdullah Butt, Haji Sohail and others addressed the protesters. They strongly criticised the police for remaining failed in providing them especially lawyers and journalists with security of life and property. They said that criminals were targeting the citizens, due to which the local people were feeling insecurity.

They added that the incidents of dacoity, mobile and bike snatching, dacoity and murder are increasing while the police could trace the outlaws. The protesters said that many motorbikes had been stolen or snatched during the last three months as crime rate in Vehari district had shot up. There are 19 police stations in the district but their performance was not satisfactory, they said.

Besides street crimes, they added, gambling and prostitution are also thriving in the district. They alleged that the police were involved all these crimes and many police officers were corrupt. They said that deals between police and accused were made openly for their release.

The speakers said that they had repeatedly complained against the crimes but to no avail. As the high officials did not pay heed to their grievances, the protesters said, they had to take to the streets. They said that during the electioneering, the rulers had promised to improve the situation but after coming to power, they had reneged on their promises.

They demanded that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and IGP police should look into the matter and take effective measures to make Vehari a peaceful land, besides protecting the lives and property of the people.
