De-camp now

In his press conference on March 2, the Governor Punjab had, among other accusations, blamed the ex CM Punjab, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif, for maintaining three camp offices at state expense which included his personal residences in Model Town, Defence and Raiwind. If that is good enough for Sharifs, what about Mr Zardari declaring his houses in Islamabad, Larkana and Karachi as 'camp offices'. What about Mr. Wasim Sajjad having his personal house declared a camp office when he was acting President for a couple of months. What about General Musharraf still living like a king in his camp office? What is this business of camp offices? We are a poor country living on hand outs and loans yet our leaders, who are, in most cases, extremely rich in their own right (whether by hook or crook) spare no opportunity to loot the exchequer. This ridiculous tradition must immediately be stopped. Anyone elected to the political high offices, whether at the federal or provincial level, must restrict himself to the accommodation provided by the state if at all necessary. His private accommodation and businesses should not be financed by the state. They may like to learn from the humble soul who gave us this wonderful country if they have to learn a lesson of high morals. -LT COL (Retd) MAHMOOD L. MALIK, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, March 3.
