ISLAMABAD The US Commander for International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF), General Stanley McChrystal on Thursday commended Pakistans efforts against violent extremists and honoured the sacrifices rendered by the country. Well-placed military and diplomatic sources informed TheNation that the ISAF Commander made these remarks while talking to the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani during a meeting at the GHQ of Pakistan Army. He also highlighted the successes, which is being achieved through increased coordination between the ISAF and Pakistan in strengthening border security and countering violent extremists. According to the US Embassy Spokesperson, ISAF Commander visited Pakistan to update General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on the ISAFs operations in Afghanistan. Ambassador Mark Sedwell, NATOs Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan, also visited to conduct meetings with the NATO officials here. General McChrystal and Ambassador Sedwell briefed the NATO and coalition ambassadors to Pakistan on the ISAFs current operations in Afghanistan. The military sources said that Pak-US relations, upcoming visit of Chief of the Army Staff to the US, Pak-US strategic dialogue and current situation in Afghanistan came under discussion during the meeting. They were of the view that General Stanley McChrystal took General Kayani into confidence over challenges, progress in the operations against Afghan Taliban and political process to reintegrate them. The sources said General Stanley A. McChrystal updated the COAS about the operational strategy and efforts to boost coordination with Pakistani security forces. The sources further said that General Kayani also shared with the visiting dignitary the challenges being faced by the Pakistani security forces regarding the militants, who are taking refuge in Afghanistan. General Kayani also expressed his concerns about the approach of the NATO and Afghan Army in addressing these critical security issues on their side of the Pak-Afghan border. The COAS also apprised the ISAF Commander about the challenges and progress being made by the Pakistani security forces against terrorist groups in Bajaur Agency, South Waziristan Agency and other regions including Orakzai Agency and Khyber Agency.
