A week-long national health conference 'Medicon Week,' on Tuesday began here under the auspices of Khawaja Safdar Medical College Sialkot (KMSMC).

Khawaja Safdar Medical College Principal Dr Zafar Ali Chaudhry told the newsmen here that the conference was providing unique opportunity to doctors and medical students to share their experiences and views and learn from each other experiences. The conference will continue till March 23, 2014.

Senior doctors including Dr Fauzia Saeed, Dr Zahid Ghani Dar, Dr Saeed Razi and Dr Mehdi Muntazir Raza gave detailed presentations about the Paediatric Audiological Assessment, Evoke Response Audiometery, Oto Acoustic Emission and various audiological scenarios during "Audiology Orientation Workshop" held at Govt Sardar Begum Memorial Teaching Hospital on the first day of the weeklong 'Medicon Week' Conference.

They stressed the need for making all out collective and individual efforts to educate people about conducting screening tests of hearing of the newly-born babies.

They also asked the government to ensure early start of an awareness raising nationwide programme about the screening test of hearing of the newly-born babies, besides, initiating much needed training of the Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) at the district and tehsil levels to motivate people in this regard.

The participants were told that as many as 650 million people across the world had been suffering from hearing problems, out of which 80 percent with hearing impairments belonged to the developing countries. They added that out of 650 million people, half patients were the children. The number of the patients with hearing impairments was rising day by day in the developing countries due to lack of information, awareness and needed medical facilities.

As many as 13 different training workshops of the doctors and medical students would be held during the weeklong national conference in which 60 senior doctors from across Pakistan will deliver lectures about the latest technologies for medical treatment, especially on Audiology Orientation, Neonatal Resuscitation, Infection Control, Developmental Paediatrics, Knee Replacement Surgery, Endoscopy, Gynae, Eye, ENT, Liver Biopsy, Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, Perinetal Diagnosis and Research Methodology.
