BAJAUR AGENCY - A polio worker was killed while another injured when some militants ambushed an anti-polio team in the border area of Bajaur Agency, officials and local people said Wednesday.
The attack took place in the mountains Kamangara locality, some 34 kilometres northwest of Khar, the headquarters of Bajaur Agency. Residents said that the polio team, being escorted by Levies personnel, was on the way to their target area when the militants opened firing on them.
Bajaur Agency Assistant Political Agent Fayazul Haq Sherpao told reporters that the incident took place just a few mints before the workers could administer polio drops to the children in the area.
“The polio workers were attacked when they were starting their activities to administering polio drops to the children in the far-flung area,” he added.
Sherpao told that a polio worker namely Rohullah died on the spot while Arifullah received critical injures in the attack.
According to the official, two Levies personnel escorting the polio team remained unhurt in the firing. After the attack, members of local peace committees rushed to the site and shifted the injured polio worker to Tehisl Headquarters in Nawagai for medical treatment.
Later, the injured polio worker was transferred here at agency headquarters hospital due his precious condition. A number of Levies personnel along with senior administration officials also rushed to the area and mounted a hunt for the attackers.
According to the officials, several people including local residents had been arrested during the search operation. The officials of the local health department in Khar revealed that at least three polio teams were in the area at the time of incident. Agency surgeon Dr Zakir Hussain while taking to this scribe confirmed that another two polio teams were also in the said locality for administering the polio drops to the children. Dr Hussain informed that polio campaign in the area has been postponed after the incident.
To a question, the official informed that both the victims were volunteers and working on campaign based. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. The polio vaccination drive, across the agency, kicked off on Monday and was to be concluded on Wednesday.
