The MQM after the Nine-Zero raid is mired in even more controversy, and again, as in the past, the PPP has decided to swoop in and make a coalition partnership with the MQM in the Sindh government. Remember last October, when the MQM quit the Pakistan Peoples Party-led coalition government in Sindh in protest at Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s derogatory remarks about Altaf Hussain. Bilawal Bhutto said that the MQM was responsible for ruining Karachi. Has he changed his mind and apologised or has the MQM decided to drop the act after the Ranger revelations? MQM Rabita committee’s deputy convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said at the time that his party’s credibility was at stake. For the sake of stability and continuation of democracy it felt that further supporting the PPP would be tantamount to weakening Pakistan. But for now, beggars can’t be choosers.

The PPP is making amends when the MQM has been exposed as the most controversial and dangerous political party in Pakistan. Sindh is now run by mafias. One don sits in Karachi and another in London. Zardari is ready to appease whomever he can to get his foot in the door so that the PPP can stay relevant. First it was with the PML-N during the dharna days, and now the MQM. The arrest of the murderer of journalist Wali Babar and the perpetrator of the Baldia factory has exposed the complicity of the MQM in criminal activity. Does this quagmire of guns and murders sound like a commitment to democracy?

The MQM represents a broad cross section of the middle and lower middle class population of urban Sindh. It is secular in character and has educated people in its ranks. But that is no excuse for crime and corruption. The MQM had massive potential to grow into a nationally relevant party, and so did the PPP. But greed and criminal leadership has spread poison throughout their system making them impotent. People will continue to turn to PML-N, PTI and assorted religious parties for their clear right wing ideologies, rather than the morality-free thieves of Karachi. Not that the others are any good, but because these two are worse.
