Top seed No 1 Riffat Khan, No 3 Zoya Khalid, No 4 Samar Anjum, and Rashna Mehboob Wednesday won their women senior matches to qualify for the 1st National Squash Championship quarter-finals here at the Punjab Squash Complex.
Most of the players played superb squash and registered thrashing victories against their opponents but an upset was also witnessed on the inauguration day when second seed Sadia Gul of SNGPL was stunned by Muqadas Ashraf of Wapda by 3-0. Top seed Riffat Khan of ZTBL crushed Farah Maqbool in straight sets 3-0. She played with full command and punished Farah severely with the scores of 11-1, 11-2, 11-2. Today (Thursday) in the quarterfinals, Riffat will take on Rashna Mehboob (ZTBL), who carved out an easy victory against Habiba Khan (ZTBL) 3-0.
While Zohab Khan (Sindh) thrashed Bushra Khalid (PU) 3-0, Zoya Khalid (ZTBL) overwhelmed Aimen Shukat (PU) 3-0, Saima Shukat (Wapda) overpowered Noorul Huda (Sindh) 3-0, Amna Latif (ZTBL) edged past Neha Khan (Sindh) 3-0 and Samar Anjum (SNGPL) thumped Aliya Sarfraz (Wapda) 3-0 to book berths in the quarterfinals.
In women U-19 category, Madiha Zafar, Noreena Shams, Muskan Shehbaz and Shama Sajid won their respective matches with utmost ease and qualified for the quarter-finals whereas Aroma after beating Fatima Shehbaz also made her way into quarter-finals.
During the main rounds in senior men’s category, Tayyub Aslam of ZTBL played extremely well against Ali Bukhari of Punjab University and outpaced him by 3-0.
SNGPL Managing Director Arif Hameed inaugurated the 1st National Senior and Junior Squash Championships being organised by SNGPL sports cell at Punjab Squash Complex. Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) vice president and Punjab Squash Association (PSA) president Amjad Ali Noon welcomed the chief guest and appreciated his efforts for the promotion of sports.
