PESHAWAR - The US government through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a new initiative to uplift FATA agriculture sector and private businesses and set the region on road to development and progress.

The initiative called the FATA Economic Stabilisation Programme (FATA ESP) is implemented by Creative Associates International in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan.

USAID FATA ESP will create jobs and improve economic opportunities in Bajaur, Mohmand and South Waziristan agencies. The programme will introduce new farming techniques, develop irrigation system, and upgrade agriculture infrastructure to improve productivity of 20,000 farmers and livestock holders.

These efforts further reinforced through the establishment and expansion of 2,000 micro and small enterprises will reduce rural poverty and pave way towards greater socio-economic stability in the region.

The programme will also facilitate business groups, traders and investors in doing profitable business in selected tribal agencies, whereby they can increase their sales of agriculture inputs and equipment to the growing farm and non-farm enterprises in the region.

In order to create a robust business enabling environment in FATA that meets the demands of national markets, ESP will build strong agriculture infrastructure and develop the capacity of new and existing local entrepreneurs.

The USAID is scaling up a comprehensive approach to counter economic instability in conflict affected regions in Pakistan by developing agricultural and business markets, investing in cutting-edge technologies and helping farmers and entrepreneurs to access capital.
