ISLAMABAD: As many as 439 Pakistani are imprisoned in Indian jails whose citizenship has been verified, out of these Pakistani prisoners 22 are in Amritsar jail.

As per document available with sources, the government of Pakistan initiated steps for release of prisoners when Pakistani Mission in India gets the information in this regard.

“The mission collects information about envisaged persons to verify their nationality and prayed the Indian authorities for their release. Once a nationality of any prisoner was verified, the mission formally sends request to Indian Ministry of External Affairs for the immediate release and repatriation of envisaged person,” the document added and maintained that if this request was not considered by the authorities concerned then Indian officials starts legal proceedings against him.

The document further says that mission arranges the legal assistance for the defense of Pakistani accused. Mission immediately facilitates the prisoners for repatriation who have completed their sentence or those who have been released by the Indian authorities.
