LAHORE - The Punjab capital city will observe the Earth Hour 2016 today, in order to show solidarity with the rest of the world and to show Pakistan cares about the planet.

To celebrate the Earth Hour, buildings where the lights will be switched off from 8:30 to 9:30pm are Town Hall, district courts, GPO, CM Secretariat, Punjab Assembly, Badshahi Mosque and Allama Iqbal International Airport.

The main event of Earth Hour will be held at Qarshi University powered by creative performances by youngsters, presence of celebrities, sky lanterns releasing and pledge taking memorable moments.

Meanwhile, the purpose of observing earth hour is to promote public awareness about global warming due to increasing use of energy, Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said yesterday.

In his message on global Earth Hour Day, Shehbaz highlighted that global warming is a serious issue and there is a need to protect the environment by taking effective measures.

“This day aims to promote a friendly attitude among the people towards environment. The world is passing through a critical era with regard to environment, as pollution and climate change have emerged as a big challenge,” said the CM, adding that every citizen should play his role for protecting the environment from pollution.

The CM also urged to switch off unnecessary electric equipments to minimise the power problems.

Meanwhile, CM Shehbaz said that the government is arranging an agri conference in the provincial metropolis today (Saturday), for seeking proposals for resolving the issues being confronted by agriculture sector and farmers.
