Terrible haste

The PPP government appears to be in terrible haste to divide Punjab and create a new province called ‘South Punjab’ and is willing to by-pass all rules and regulations. The latest move is that Prime Minister Gilani has constituted a four-member committee with Makhdoom Shahabuddin and Sughra Imam as its members to recommend ways and means to move forward for creation of the new province. The irony of fate is that while the PPP government and its allies are engaged in dividing Punjab into two, the PML-N leadership is thinking of splitting it into three. Consequently, it has raised the demand for restoration of Bahawalpur Province. Earlier, the PPP was vying for Saraiki province which was a move to create a separate province on linguistic basis but better sense prevailed and they changed their demand into ‘Janoobi Punjab’. It is an open secret that all this is being done for political gains. The PPP did not raise the demand for a separate province while it was in power on three previous occasions. Political observers are of the view that it is being done to reduce the strength of its arch rival, the PML-N. But this has led to demands on similar bases for more provinces like Hazara, Fata and now MQM asking for carving up Sindh on urban and rural basis. This is a dangerous trend and detrimental to national stability. Political point scoring would add to the prevailing unrest. Political parties must rise above personal interest and act in a manner that strengthen the nation.
