She may have put on an affectionate display with her new man Calvin Harris at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, but it was Taylor Swift’s professional achievements which overshadowed her personal life for once.

All eight of the big awards of the night (including Top Artist) went to Taylor, who also debuted her star-packed music video Bad Blood to open the show.

Upon taking the stage after winning Top 200 Album, Taylor gushed: ‘I am so happy to win this for 1989. We put it out and you guys embraced change… for me doing something new. I love you more than I will ever be able to say to you. I love you so much.’

Swift than nabbed the gong for Top Female Artist. Taking the stage again, she was brought to tears as she said: ‘To win female artist is incredible because one of the best things to happen to me is I have surrounded myself with incredible women. To all the girls out there thank you for this award.’ She then took home the Billboard Chart Achievement Award (fan-voted) with eight all together.

Earlier One Direction celebrated the first win of the night. But the moment was overshadowed by their friend and former bandmate Zayn Malik’s absence. Liam Payne thanked their fans before admitting: ‘There’s one more person to share this with and that is our brother Zayn.’ The boys won for both Top Group and later that evening for Top Touring Artist.

Meanwhile, next up for the winners that night was Iggy Azalea who took home the gong for Top Rap Song. The Australian accepted the honour with Charli XCX who is featured on Fancy.

At first Iggy refused to talk, opting for Charli to speak first. ‘This is really cool,’ Charli began awkwardly, ‘we waited awhile for this. Thanks Iggy for getting me to do this.’

Then the blonde hip hop star chimed in: ‘When I first wrote this song it was leaked and it was called Leave It and it wasn’t a number one hit. And Charli really made it what it is.’

Sam Smith video chatted in to accept the award for Top Male Artist. The singer is currently recovering from throat surgery so he used poster signs to give his speech.

Smith had a message for Swift, writing, ‘Taylor put a 100 on black for me,’ referencing the venues location in Las Vegas. But this was not the only reference to Nicki’s posterior as Van Halen, who performed Panama to open the awards show, had a go at it too, despite their status as middle aged men. Swift introduced the Eighties band at the beginning of the show.

And David Lee Roth improvised a line in the middle of a rendition of Panama, saying: ‘I’m gonna reach down between my legs and gonna let Nicki Minaj help me put my seat back baby.’

One Direction returned to the stage to present John Legend with the gong for Top Radio Song. The 36-year-old piano man playfully said: ‘I have to of course thank our beautiful co-host my wife Chrissy Teigen. I was inspired to write this for a beautiful talented woman. Thank you!’

Meghan Trainor took the gong for Top Hot 100 Song, breaking into tears as she gave her acceptance speech: ‘Oh my god thank you so much! I wanna say thank you to my mom and my dad for believing in me since I was a baby.’
