LAHORE Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave a detailed briefing to PML -N President Nawaz Sharif regarding implementation of the action plan for the promotion of sports activities in the province at a meeting here on Friday. Parliamentarians including Anusha Rehman, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Salman Rafiq, Khawaja Imran Nazir, Nasim Qadir, renowned cricketer Amir Sohail, Lahore Transport Company Chairman Khawaja Ahmad Hasaan, Commissioner and District Coordination Officer Lahore, LDA Director General and prominent personalities associated with sports sector were also in attendance. Additional Chief Secretary Nadeem Hassan Asif while highlighting the salient features of the strategy for the promotion of sports in the province, said that grounds for cricket, hockey, football, wrestling and other sports of international standard are being developed in the provincial metropolis and a comprehensive action plan is being speedily implemented for the promotion of sports in Punjab. He said that a new department has been set up for sports, youth affairs, archaeology and tourism to provide infrastructure and arrange sports competitions in addition to extend sports facilities and organise coaching programmes and workshops for the players. He said that Punjab Sports Council has been set up at the provincial level for the promotion of healthy activities and the Sports Council for this purpose in the provincial metropolis. Similarly, he said, sports councils will be formed at district and tehsil levels. He said that local grounds committees comprising elected representatives, sports personalities, local community, players and local administration will also be set up which will be responsible for the maintenance of these grounds and holdings of sports activities with the consultation of the institutions concerned. He said that special attention has been focused on the provision of sports facilities to women. Nawaz Sharif said on the occasion, said that only healthy minds constitute a healthy society, therefore promotion of healthy activities is of vital importance. He said that sports play an important role in grooming the personality of youngsters and polishing their talent, therefore, there is a need for promotion of sports activities with the participation of private sector. He pointed out a number of grounds in the provincial metropolis as well as in other parts of the province which could be developed for the use of young sportsmen the youth for sports activities. He said that all rounds of Iqbal Park should be improved for providing sports opportunities to the young generation. He said that Additional Chief Secretary, DG LDA, DG Sports and prominent cricketers Amir Sohail should evolve a comprehensive strategy with mutual consultation in the light of which rapid progress should be made for the promotion of sports activities. He said that steps should also be taken for the capacity-building of Punjab Sports Board for promoting healthy activities in the province. The Chief Minister said that provincial government is implementing a comprehensive plan for promoting sports activities in the province and a network of playgrounds is being laid in the provincial metropolis. He said that more than 100 playgrounds of international standard are being construction in the provincial metropolis while sites have also been identified for construction of more grounds. He said that the first women cricket academy of the country has been set up in Lahore while private sector has also been included in the promotion of sports activities. condoles: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief over the death of the mother of Nahid Khan, a senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party.
