PPP for thorough probe

ISLAMABAD - The core committee of Pakistan Peoples Party discussed the overall political situation in the country with special reference to the 'memo controversy and it was consensus view of the participants that a thorough probe into the matter should be made and punitive action be taken if anyone is found guilty. The meeting held at Awan-i-Sadr on Friday was jointly chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while a select party ministers and leaders were in attendance. Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting informed The Nation that both president and prime minister were firm to take action against the responsible persons in 'memo saga and the things would be thoroughly probed. The participants were informed that Pakistan Ambassador to US Husain Haqqani was already summoned back to clear his position and if found guilty he would be sacked, a source told the president as saying. Both the leaders reiterated their pledge that they would fulfil their constitutional obligations as custodians of the state institutions and would quell any conspiracy against any of the state institutions. The meeting reposed full confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. The relations with MQM and the Zulfiqar Mirza related controversy also figured in the meeting and President Zardari said that Zulfiqar Mirza was already ousted from the party and all what he uttered was his personal views and the party has nothing to do with it. The party reiterated to firm up relations with MQM and President Asif Ali Zardari said that he had already tasked the Sindh Chapter of PPP under the headship of Qaim Ali Shah to sit with MQM leaders to redress their genuine grievances. He also referred to the revamping of Karachi PPP chapter with Senator Faisal Raza Abidi as its head and hoped that things would change for better in the days to come. Meanwile briefing about the meeting Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that overall political situation with particular reference to recent developments was discussed during the meeting. He said the meeting noted that Ambassador Hussain Haqqani had been called to Islamabad to give his viewpoint to the countrys leadership on the controversial memo issue. It observed that natural justice demanded that the Ambassador was given a fair opportunity to give his version of the controversy. The meeting noted that NRO related cases would come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Nov 21, and vowed to vigorously defend the sanctity of the graves of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. It expressed the hope that the cry for justice rising from the grave of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto would also attract the attention of the independent judiciary. Those who were present in the meeting included Senator Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, Rehman Malik, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, Khursheed Ahmed, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Naveed Qamar, Babar Awan, Senators Jahangir Badar, Faisal Raza Abidi and Sardar Ali Khan, Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Parvez Ashraf, Rukhsana Bangash, Fouzia Wahab, Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar.
