LAHORE – In the wake of Karachi bombing, security has been stepped up across the provincial metropolis to provide protection to the mourners participating in Muharram processions and Majalis, a top police officer said on Sunday night.

“We understand that this Muharram is very crucial as far as maintaining peace in the City and foolproof security for the mourners is concerned. We are reviewing the security plan on daily basis,” Lahore Operations Police Chief, Muhammad Tahir Rai told The Nation late on Sunday night.

Responding to a question, DIG (Operations) further said that the Lahore police had also chalked out what he said a plan-B in case law and order situation go out of control anywhere.

“Thousands of policemen are on their toes as we can’t afford any type of negligence or laxity at this time,” Muhammad Tahir Rai insisted.

Meanwhile, according to a city police spokesman, the DIG (Operations) paid surprise visits to the areas declared as sensitive and most sensitive in the City and reviewed the Niaz Baig, and cantonment areas and gave guidelines to the police.

BOMB DEFUSED: Dozens of mourners staged a demonstration in Imamia Colony against the bomb blast in Karachi.  Police sources revealed that the Bomb Disposal Squad defused a bomb placed near Abbas Chowk in Imamia Colony, where a Muharram Majlis was taking place on Sunday night.

 As the mourners got information about the bomb placed near the gathering, they got infuriated and started protesting.

 The bomb disposal experts defused the bomb immediately.

 The police have begun investigations to probe into the incident.
