The district administration launched a vigorous clean-up operation to dismantle all sorts of encroachments from Nullah Bhed in the city. Officials of different departments including the revenue, irrigation, environment, public health engineering and the Sialkot TMA removed encroachments established by local influential people and owners of tanneries along the banks of Nullah Bhed. The officials also carried out de-silting of the nullah and dug it further to enhance its depth besides realignment and widening of the nullah to restore its original shape and size with the help of heavy excavation machinery.

On the occasion, DCO Nadeem Sarwar informed that the clean-up drive would continue to ensure smooth flow of water in the nullah which had been lying choked at various places due to massive dumping of effluent by local tanneries, private hospitals, clinics, private educational institutions and locals.

He claimed that now dumping of effluent or garbage in local all nullahs had already been banned under Section 144 PPC.

He said that massive discharge of chemical-laden industrial waste and other effluents had badly polluted underground water in and around local seasonal nullahs in Sialkot, besides, creating environmental pollution.

Mr Sarwar announced immediate closure of all tanneries, chemical and marble factories, found dumping disposing of effluent into local nullahs.

Local MPA Ch Muhammad Ikram, DOC Malik Abid Hussain Awan, Administrator Sialkot TMA Mehmood Awan and district heads of other departments were also present on the occasion.
