Past in Perspective

“It depends upon what the meaning of the

word ‘is’ is. If ‘is’ means is and never has been, that’s one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement.”

–Bill Clinton

The United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee begins impeachment hearing against the US President Bill Clinton. The hearing was called after it was proved that Clinton had lied about his relations with Miss Lewinsky on national television. The impeachment clause was then invoked by the House of Representatives. This case shows the strength of democratic institutions in United States. A popular President was almost impeached for lying about personal matters. We can compare this the political situation in Pakistan where Prime Ministers can avoid accountability easily. Nawaz Sharif’s ouster is treated as an undemocratic move on behalf of the judiciary. A good democracy relies on strong independent institutions which can keep even the most powerful accountable.
