Clemency for all

According to a news item, the case of Indian spy Sarabjit Singh will be considered for mercy by the president. Sarabjit was involved in bomb blasts in various places in Pakistan before he was held, tried and declared a spy and terrorist by a court of law. He was waiting for a death warrant at present. The Indian government had requested the former President Musharraf for clemency but he had turned down the request. Now we are told our elected, democratic government is going to do it. Pakistani public has a right to ask why a killer of innocent Pakistanis is being offered clemency? What will we be getting from Indian government in lieu of this? Are we getting back any of our citizens presently imprisoned in India? Remember, we have received bodies of Pakistanis from across the border during past few months. These bodies, we might as well remember, were desecrated in such a way that even their vital organs, like livers and kidneys, were stolen. Why does our government has sympathy for an Indian spy and but not for its own innocent citizens awaiting clemency in Indian prisons? -NAILA SIDDIQUI, Karachi, via e-mail, October 9.
