ISLAMABAD Pakistan WAPDA, PAF, Army and HBL won their matches of the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Gold Cup Hockey Tournament against their respective challengers here at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex on Sunday. Also, WAPDA beat Police 1-0, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) beat Customs 6-4, and Pakistan Army thrashed 9-0, on the 4th day of the prestigious national hockey showpiece, jumping into the quarterfinals of the tournament. National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have already qualified for the quarterfinals. On Sunday, WAPDA and Police locked their horns in the first match of the day, as WAPDA got rid of Police 1-0 after 70 minutes in the field. However, the fullback Adeel Akram scored the loan goal in the 45th minute of the match on penalty corner. However, both the teams missed many occasions to put the ball in the net during the first half of the match. The forwards were not giving final touches in style and joint efforts to take lead were lacking. Later, a 45th minute penalty corner proved fruitful for WAPDA to win the crucial match. In the second match of the day, PAF overcame Customs 6-4 with the major contribution of Imran Hafeez who struck his second hat trick at the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Gold Cup Hockey Tournament. He netted the ball back-to-back thrice in the 25th, 29th and 39th minute of the match. Earlier, Zeeshan, Burkat and skipper Kashif scored one goal each for the winners. At water break, PAF was leading 5-1 and Customs displayed excellent game in the second half and added three more goals to reduce the deficit. Adnan Sohail scored two goals while Muhammad Zubair and Muhammad Ali Khan chipped in one goal each for Customs. Pakistan Army stunned hosts Islamabad 9-0 in the third fixture of the day. It was a single sided affair in which Army men kept the ball under their control consistently. Waqas Zafar, Waqas Junior and Muhammad Kashif scored two goals each for Army while Shahid Rao, Muhammad Afzal and Muhammad Safeer netted the ball once. Habib Bank Limited (HBL) thrashed Punjab 4-0 in the last match of the day on Sunday. HBL displayed a powerful game and scored three goals in the first part of the match. However, they looked a bit slow in the second half of the match, adding only a single goal in their tally. Ali Azlan contributed 2 while Nasir Shehzad and Rizwan Khan one goal each for their team.
