According to the UN Environment Program, at present 261 river basins are shared by two or more countries. So conflicts may become inevitable among them over the issue of sharing water once the projected acute scarcity of this commodity becomes a reality. Professor William Mitsch at a conference on 'Global Water Crisis held in Sweden has presented a thesis that there is an overwhelming possibility of eruption of water wars in the near future. He further stated that he did not know what would shake the planet out of complacency if not the fact that there could be droughts, pestilence and wars over water rights in near future. In view of the above situation, is it not the responsibility of the national press in Pakistan to inform the public of the impending disaster and explain the pros and cons of building dams, large and small? It is only the print and the electronic media that can save Pakistan from a fate worse than death. -KHURSHID ANWER, San Francisco, October 17.
