LAHORE - A 40-year-old drug-peddler died shortly after he was arrested by police from the fruits and vegetable market in Ravi Road police area.
Police claimed that Sajjad alias Nanha suffered heart attack and was rushed to the Mayo Hospital where he expired later. The police also seized four packets of charas from his possession during the raid.
A police team raided the market yesterday morning and arrested Sajjad, whose name was included in the lists of drug dealers. City police have launched a crackdown on drug pushers and raids are underway to catch the criminals involved in drug-peddling.
Yesterday’s raid was part of the anti-narcotics campaign launched in Lahore last month. The body was moved to the morgue for an autopsy.
On the other hand, Ejaz Ahmed, brother of the deceased, alleged that Sajjad was tortured to death by the policemen. He held that the police brutally thrashed his brother during the raid.
Lahore DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf took notice of the death in custody and ordered an inquiry to investigate the incident.
Meanwhile, a murder case was registered against seven policemen on the complaint of Ejaz Ahmed. The policemen nominated in the FIR were arrested immediately and they were being interrogated in connection with the killing.
