ISLAMABAD-M Abid, Raja Shahid, Abaas Khan, Barkatullah, Shahid Afridi, Arham Atiq and Shahzad Khan moved into the second round of the 1st Chairman POF Board National Ranking Tennis Championship, after defeating their respective opponents in the first round matches played at POF Ordinance Club, Wah on Tuesday.

Veteran Davis Cupper Hameed-ul-Haq fought hard but was unable to defeat youngster Raja Shahid. Hameed won the first set 6-4 by breaking 10th game of Shahid, who then made a strong comeback and won the second set 6-1 and took the third 6-3 to win the marathon encounter. The best encounter of the day was played between Talha Bin Asif and Shahid Afridi. The first set was decided in the tie break, which Talha won 7-3. Shahid played quality tennis and took the second set 6-3 while in the third set, both the players tied at 6-6 and then on tie break, Shahid won the set 7-1.

In other matches of the day, M Abid beat Brig Allah Nawaz 6-1, 6-2, Abbas Khan thrashed Tahirullah Khan 6-1, 6-2, Barkat Ullah beat Youasf Khan 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, Arham Atiq routed Israr Gul 6-1, 6-2 and Shahzad Khan thumped Usman Ejaz 6-2, 6-0.

In the boys’ U-18 singles first round matches, Muzammil Murtaza crushed Kamran Khan 6-0,6-0, Asad Ullah beat Sheeraz Bhand 6-2, 6-4, Hafiz Arbab Ali got walk over against Syed M Ahmed, Haider Ali Khan got w/o against Raja Azan, Yousaf Khan outclassed Shakir Ullah 6-1, 6-2, Hamza bin Rehan downed Sami Zaib 6-3, 6-0, Barkat Ullah defeated Ahmed Asjad Qureshi 6-0, 6-4, M Shoaib thumped Irfan Mugal 6-2, 6-1 and Aman Atiq routed Abdullah Bin Ilyas 6-1, 6-0.

In the boys’ U-14 singles first round matches, Zalan Khan beat Abdullah Shafaqat 2-4, 4-1, 4-1, Shayan Shamraiz outlasted Abdullah Ishaq 4-1, 4-2 while Kamran Khan defeated Yaha Musa Luni 4-0, 4-5(7), 4-0.
