KARACHI - President Asif Ali Zardari and the top PPP leadership have rejected the MQM demand to assign it the portfolios of home ministry and local government in Sindh, well-informed sources told The Nation here on Thursday. After a meeting with MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London, President Asif Ali Zardari also called on Sindh Chief Minister, governor Dr Ishratul Ebad khan, members of the provincial cabinet, CDGK Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal and Hyderabad Nazim Kunwar Naveed Jameel. Sources added that President Asif Ali Zardari was of the view that being a majority party in the Sindh government, PPP has the right to get lion's share in the provincial cabinet. He however assured the MQM leaders that PPP would not encroach the rights of it coalition partner and would avoid any intervention in the affairs of the CDGK. The President asked the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad khan to focus on bringing foreign investment into the province in order to end poverty in rural and urban areas. Sources added that after the Eid, some reshuffling would be held in the Sindh cabinet. During a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, NRB Chairman Dr Asim also gave presentation on local government system. Majority of the PPP leaders opined that local government system was the brainchild of former President Pervez Musharraf which, instead of building infrastructure, had curtailed powers of the provinces. They said that Local Bodies System should be amended in consultation with the provincial governments. Talking to newsmen at the Jinnah International Airport after her return from Islamabad, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said that PPP has cordial relations with MQM and with the passage of time it would be further strengthened. She said that in a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, she discussed the ongoing power crisis and water issue in the province. Marri added that there was a need of improvement in the local government system because, in its present form, it reflected policies of dictatorial regime of Pervez Musharraf. She appreciated President Asif Ali Zardari for taking bold stand on all issues confronting the country.
