SRINAGAR  - Hundreds of protesters clashed with security forces and burnt a police vehicle Tuesday during angry demonstrations over an anti-Islam movie made in the United States.All shops and businesses were shut in the restive Muslim-majority Himalayan region by a strike called to protest against the film, which was produced in the United States by an extremist Christian and convicted fraudster from Egypt.Clashes erupted in central Srinagar when a group of about 300 protesters attempted to march to the local United Nations building but were stopped by police.They threw stones and torched a police van while security forces fired volleys of teargas to keep them back.In other protests dotted around the city, crowds of young men shouted anti-US slogans and burnt American and Israeli flags as well as effigies of US President Barack Obama.Activists of Jammu and Kashmir Mass Movement led by it Chairperson Fareeda Behanji staged a protest against at Lal Chowk, Kashmir Media Service reported.Talking to the media, Fareeda Behanji said, “We cannot tolerate insult to Muslims. We will protest against the act in every corner of the world.”Hundreds of students under the banner of Students Union Islamic University protested against the film. In Baramulla town, lawyers of district court took out a march and presented a memorandum at District Commissioner’s Office. In Jammu, female students of Darul Uloom Gulshan-e-Madina Bantalab staged a demonstration. In Kishtwar, normal life came to a standstill following a strike call given by a Coordination Committee of Muslims in the area. All educational institutions, shops and other business establishments remained closed while traffic was off the road. People assembled at Jamia Masjid to denounce the anti-Muslim video.A similar demonstration was held in Doda. Earlier, students took to the streets. They were joined by the students of other educational institutions.In Bhaderwah, the students of Government Degree College and Government Higher Secondary School for Boys and Girls took out a rally against the film. The students of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri also held a demonstration and boycotted their classes in protest against the blasphemous film.
