PESHAWAR - In the wake of Bannu jailbreak incident, the Central Jail Peshawar administration has stopped shifting of inmates to other jails of the province due to security concerns.
Sources said that up till now, 200 detainees involved in serious crimes have been shifted from Central Jail Peshawar to Haripur, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat. However, 800 more inmates would be shifted to Lakki Marwat and Dera Islamil Khan jails and their security matters would be handed over to Pakistan Army.
Meanwhile, the security of all central jails has been beefed up due to the Bannu jail attack and extra contingents have been deployed at all the central jails including Peshawar. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government decided this in a cabinet meeting that the high profile militants would be shifted to other districts and a special jail would be established in Lakki Marwat for the big offenders.
Sources in the jail administration said that they could not disclosed the number of militants in Peshawar Central Jail, however some of the high profile militants have been shifted to other areas due to security concern.
It is worth mentioning here that last years three important militants had escaped from police captivity when their armed supporters gunned down them near Khyber College of Dentistry. After the incident, the jail superintend and others staffers were suspended.
On the midnight of Sunday and Monday, hundreds of armed militants attacked Bannu jail and released 384 militants from the jail premises. It was the biggest ever jail break up in the history of Pakistan in which such a large number of inmates escaped from the jail.
Differences also have been surfaced between provincial and federal governments regarding fixing of responsibility on each other. The provincial government is of the view that lack of sufficient personnel of Frontier Constabulary, which has been deployed in federal capital, was creating problems.
