ISLAMABAD – To celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the passing of Article 25-A in the 18th Amendment which gives all children aged 5-16 the right to free & compulsory education as well as to remind the government to make the necessary legislations to implement the Article, an event was held at a Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) F-6/1 Islamabad. 

The event was organized in collaboration with Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA), National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) and Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ).

Two years have passed since the Article 25-A was passed by the Parliament on April 19, 2010. However, as of now no legislation has taken place for implementation of the Article.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General NCHD Khusro Parvez stressed on the extreme problems of education that Pakistan currently faces.

He was of the view that education has now become a provincial subject, and therefore it is now the duty of the provinces to enact legislation for the Article.

Waqar Ashraf, FDE Director Training, emphasized the importance of quality of education. He said that while implementing Right to Education (RTE) steps must be taken on immediate basis to ensure provision of quality education to all children of Pakistan, so that they are on equal footing.

Ayesha Bilal, Program Manager Right to Education, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, said that it is high time that education becomes the highest priority for the government. She was of the view that immediate steps need to be taken for the implementation of Article 25-A, and encouraged the government to step up its efforts to ensure free and compulsory education for all children of Pakistan.

On the occasion, the charter of demand for ‘Right to Education’ was formally presented to Senator Talha Mehmood which has been signed by more than 0.5 million citizens of Pakistan. It is part of the campaign for one million signatures for right to education, which is currently under process throughout Pakistan.

This is a citizens led initiative with multiple organizations participating passionately to collect one million signatures before May 30, 2012 to stress on the need to implement Article 25 A.
