KARACHI – The Administrator of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Muhammad Hussain Syed on Thursday paid a detailed visit to Mehran Highway after completion of its phase one.

He was accompanied by DG Technical Services, Altaf Memon, Senior Directors, Dr Shoukat Zaman, and concerned chief engineers. On this occasion, the Administrator said the 3.7 kilometre long phase-I of this project was completed with cost of Rs300 million which would facilitate transportation of goods from the industrial units and export processing zone while it would also provide substantial convenience to citizens. The second phase that would include the construction of 5 kilometre portion of Mehran Highway would be completed with the cooperation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with a cost of Rs450 million. The third phase of this project that would include the construction of two kilometre road connecting Hospital Chowrangi to Pakistan Steel would be carried out in next four months.

Administrator Karachi said the construction of Mehran Highway would expedite the industrialization process and strengthen the local industrial units in this area. He said removal of encroachments in the way of highway underway and an RCC drain was installed alongside highway to ensure swift drainage of rain water. Syed further said a total of 11km track would be constructed during the three phases of this project with a three meter wide median.

He said completion of this project would pave way for more business and commercial activity in this area facilitating the trips of local business community as well as foreign investors and industrialists. He said development process in the city going on and many of ongoing projects would be completed by the end of current financial year.

Work on Shahra-e-Quaideen, Hub River Road, Korangi Causeway, Shahra-e-Altaf and a few roads of Landhi and Korangi underway speedily which would also be completed in time. He said construction of eight more flyovers and underpasses would soon start in the city and about 11 pedestrian bridges would be installed at different roads to facilitate the citizens.

Administrator KMC said construction of hospitals, maternity homes, medical complex and renovation of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Spencer Eye Hospital would also begin in the current month while the under construction projects about recreation and sports would also finish this year.

Director General Technical Services while giving briefing to Administrator regarding Mehran Highway said that the construction of highway comply with international standard. The alongside RCC drain was also covered so that the sewage and industrial waste could drain out smoothly.
