ISLAMABAD The Privileges Committee of the Senate directed the Ministry of Sports on Thursday to write to the President Asif Ali Zardari about the recommendations of the committee in which they have demanded the removal of PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt. The Committee met here at the Parliament House in the chair of Senator Tahir Hussain Mushadi and was attended by Senator Abbas Khan, Senator Haroon Khan, Senator Rehana Yahya Baloch, Senator Mohammad Ismail Buledi, Senator Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman and former Senator Mohammad Enver Baig. Secretary Ministry of Sports Aziz Ahmed Balour, Chairman PCB Ijaz Butt, Joint Secretary Ministry of Sports Raiz-ul-Islam, Legal Advisor PCB Taffazul Rizvi and Subhan Ahmed were also present in the meeting. Chairman of the Privileges Committee Syed Tahir Mushadi told reporters that all members the unanimously decided to demand the removal of the PCB chairman. We have directed the Ministry of Sports to write the President about our recommendations. The President is the Patron-in-Chief of the PCB and he will honour our recommendations, he said. He further said that the committee gave full chance to chairman PCB to clarify his position but he did not respond and requested more time but which was not possible. However, the PCB admitted the allegation in the documents which had been submitted by them in the House. Butt was also not well prepared for the meeting, he said. Responding to a question, he said that if the President does not take action on the recommendation of the committee, then this issue would be taken up in the Senate session. President Asif Ali Zardari is a democratic president of the country and he will honour the recommendation of the Privileges Committee, he added. Mushadi said that two privileges motions were tabled against Ijaz Butt. Chairman PCB had breached the privilege of the members in 2009 saying that he did not accept the powers of Senate Standing Committee on Sports and now for the second time he has accused the Senators of blackmailing at Lahore, he said. However, Ijaz Butt denied the press reports and told the House that distorted stories have been published against him. But the PCB documents clearly show that he made the statements against Senator Haroon and Senator Tariq Azeem. We will not tolerate any word against the prestige of the Senate and any of its committee, he viewed. He said that it was unanimous decision of the members of the committee to approach the President to seek action against the head of the PCB who breached the privileges of the Senators. I hope the President will take action. This issue can be taken up in the Senate meeting if the President does not act on our recommendations, he concluded.
