ISLAMABAD/PESHAWAR - After observance of Eid in some tribal areas on Saturday and in most areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, the majority of Pakistanis will celebrate this religious festival today.

Big Eid congregations will be held at open places‚ mosques and Eidgahs in the major cities and towns. The Ulema in their sermons will highlight the significance and philosophy of this sacred day.

Special prayers will be offered for the progress and prosperity of the country and welfare of the Muslims across the world. Prayers will also be offered for early liberation of occupied Muslim territories, including Kashmir and Palestine.

In the federal capital, the main Eid congregation will be held at the Faisal Mosque where parliamentarians‚ envoys of Muslim countries and top government officials will offer Eid prayers along with thousands of people. Security has been beefed up in most parts of the country to avoid any untoward incident on the auspicious occasion.

On the other hand, Eid was officially celebrated in most of the parts on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the tribal agencies and frontier regions on Sunday. Differing with the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, Peshawar zonal committee and the unofficial committee of Masjid Qasim Khan, after receiving evidences of moon-sighting on Saturday night, had announced observance of Eid on Sunday, and the provincial government condoned their announcement.

Eid was celebrated in Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Tank districts and in some pockets of Malakand agency, Swat, Dir Upper and Dir Lower, DI Khan. In Peshawar, Eid prayer was offered in over 200 mosques. The central Eid congregation was held at Eid Gah where Provincial Khateeb Maulana Roohullah Madni led the prayer. Eid prayer was attended by large number of the people including Federal Minister for Railways and ANP Leader Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour.

Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti offered Eid prayers at the mosque of CM House. High ranking officials of the provincial administration were present in the prayer. Special prayer was offered for integrity and solidarity of the country on the occasion. Ruet-e-Hilal committee of Dera Ismail Khan also changed its decision after being pressed by the provincial administration and announced to celebrate Eid on Sunday. Maulana Fazlur Rehman offered Eid prayer in Dera Ismail Khan.

But KPK Governor Barrister Masud Kausar did not go along the decision of the provincial government and he, a representative of federal government, would celebrate Eid on Monday. People of Hazara division of KPK also decided to celebrate Eid on Monday on the call of Hazara Sooba Tehrik chief Baba Haider Zaman. Eid in cantonment areas of the province and Chitral will also be celebrated today.

However, Eid was also observed on Sunday in some districts of Balochistan, including Chaman, Zhob, Qila Abdullah and Gulistan. Eid was celebrated in Saudi Arabia‚ Qatar‚ Yemen‚ United Arab Emirates‚ Europe and the United States on Sunday. But in occupied Kashmir and in India, it is being observed today.
