LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed the authorities to accelerate the pace of repair and construction work of the schools across the province.

Presiding over a meeting yesterday, the chief minister expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved so far in Parho-Punjab-Bharho Punjab Project launched under the Education Reform Roadmap. He said the promotion of quality education is of great importance for eliminating the trends of extremism.

“The goal of development and prosperity of the country can also be achieved through promotion of education,” he added.

Appreciating improvement in attendance of schoolchildren and teachers, Shahbaz Sharif said the government was marching forward speedily for achieving educational targets fixed under the programme. He also expressed the hope that the target of 100 percent enrolment of school going children would be achieved through hard work and determination.

Informing that cooperation of British Council was being sought for teachers’ training, the CM said the achievement of educational targets and promotion of quality education was impossible without proper guidance.

He also stressed the importance of effective monitoring system, besides the balance in punishment and reward for achieving educational targets.

“Providing resources for promotion of education is an investment for the bright future of the country and the nation,” Shahbaz Sharif said.

Special representative for DFID Sir Michael Barber said that the efforts of CM Shahbaz Sharif and his team under “Parho Punjab-Barho Punjab” programme were commendable.

DFID’s new head in Pakistan Joanna Reid said that she was greatly impressed by the working style of Shahbaz Sharif. She lauded the steps taken by the Punjab government for imparting quality education to the children.
