MIRPURKHAS - Despite announcement by the Farmer Organisation Council (FOC) Sindh for holding a sit-in in front of Mirpurkhas Sugar Mill on Dec 22 to press Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) to withdraw its decision of closing sugar mills in the province, one sugar mill in Digri has announced to resume crushing of canes from today (Tuesday).

It has also issued indents to the growers.

Owners of Digri Sugar Mills have assured the growers that they would be paid the amount for supplying cane to them.

When contacted, FOC Sindh Chairman Javed Ahmed Junejo said, “We have postponed the sit-in of Dec 22 for some time, and decided to prepare a course of action in consultation with the growers within 72 hours.”

“I will call the meeting of growers very soon to chalk out a future course of action if the sugar mills are not opened,” he said, and added, “We have asked the growers to start harvesting for transportation to the Digri Sugar Mills.”

He said today PSMA Sindh had been defeated as Digri sugar mill had defied its orders. “Now it is the responsibility of the growers to supply more canes to us,” he asserted.
