Holbrookes visit

RICHARD Holbrooke had conversations with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and President Zardari and a limited question/answer session with slected media. Given the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and the US anxiety to rush out in a 'respectful manner, the frequency of his visits has increased. In the darkness that prevails, the US is eager to not just avoid the consequences of its actions on Afghan soil, but also to fix the blame on Islamabad. To all intents and purposes, it is uncalled for to roll out the red carpet for him every time he arrives here to dictate the US agenda. The Americans have always ditched us and this time around they should be told plainly to clean the mess they are leaving behind in Afghanistan. His stance has always been imperial and the countrys leadership, including the President and the Prime Minister, should know that by offering themselves as audience for his sermons, they are indeed acknowledging the supremacy of US authority over our integrity and sovereignty. While talking to a private TV channel, the special envoy confirmed that the US would pay $ 349 million of the Coalition Support Fund within a week. Though he tried to give the impression that Washington was being kind to us, the fact remains that the US actually owes this money plus a whole lot more, to Pakistan; so, in the first place, no favour is being done to us. According to estimates, we have suffered losses worth $ 35 billion in the war on terror and in comparison what has been given to us as compensation can only be termed as peanuts. Besides, the aid largesse of $ 7.5 billion earmarked for the next five years, has been deliberately held back and there is little hope that the promise would be fulfilled. Interestingly, Mr Holbrooke also praised Pakistan for easing the visa restrictions. However, this again is proof of the malicious intent of our false ally, because while we have once again softened up our visa policy, the US has flatly turned down all requests by the government to end the humiliating screening process for Pakistanis at US airports. _
