LAHORE – Hardened of the criminals currently housed in Kot Lakhpat jail have launched a campaign against jail authorities only to keep them under pressure and get illegal relief in imprisonment, a senior officer of the prison department said on Saturday.

He said that to fulfil their nefarious designs they (criminals) were disseminating disinformation about the jail authorities. Superintendent of Camp Jail Lahore, Ijaz Asghar said that an accused jailed on the charges of murder case was shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail from Camp jail on administrative grounds who wanted to come back in Camp Jail after being recommended by some political quarters, but Ijaz refused to accept him in Camp Jail.

During this some more accused were jailed in narcotics cases, who were awarded punishment of ‘Urdi’ (transfer of residence in jail on daily basis) after their involvement in violation of jail rules. The Superintendent Ijaz Asghar said that relatives of accused Asif on his direction managed some pictures outside Camp Jail of jail staff and showed them as receiving bribe from the two visitors. He said that same pictures instead of publishing in any newspapers were sent to him and his subordinate staff and threatened of publishing them in press. “I refused to surrender and asked them to go ahead and I will not forgive the accused”. Ijaz was of the view that some former officials of Camp Jail were also involved in dissemination of disinformation about Camp Jail only to malign the jail administration and get them posted here.

He said that after taking over the charge of Camp Jail he has tried to set the thing aright and there were good number of things yet to be corrected. He claimed that extra facilities provided to the influentials in jails were taken back like room cooler, bed mattress, ovens and other things and a store was packed with such articles.

All such facilities were being given to the influentials against payments of huge amounts, he disclosed. He said Punjab government had also taken notice of such facilities on which action was also taken against former management. Former management of Camp Jail was very keen in taking over again the charge of Camp Jail and for this purpose former officers were going to any extent to defame the present jail management, he claimed.

Ijaz Asghar said that a water filtration plant was installed in Camp Jail which was operational and clean drinking water was being provided to the prisoners.

He claimed that it was installed with the cooperation of philanthropists and Camp Jail was the very first jail of the province where this facility was being provided.
