DUBAI - The last moment’s heroics of Aizaz Cheema snatched victory from the jaws of Peshawar Zalmi in the first qualifying final of the first ever Pakistan Super League (PSL) here at the jam-packed Dubai Cricket Stadium on Friday night.

Quetta Gladiators registered the thrilling one-run victory on the last ball of the match and made their way to the inaugural Pakistan Super League. In reply to the winning target of 134-run, Zalmi were all out for 132 on the last ball. Darren Sammy was their key batsmen who hit very hard and brought his team close to the victory but Cheema defied his heroics and restricted Zalmi to 132. Sammy managed to score 38 runs with the help of five fours and one towering six followed by Wahab Riaz who slammed significant 22 while M Hafeez, Shahid Yousaf and Jonny Bairstow all contributed 15 runs each.

Star of the night Aizaz Cheema although managed to take 2-34 but he took two crucial wickets which turned the tables on Zalmi. Grant Elliot and M Nawaz also bowled brilliantly and clinched three wickets each for 19 and 27 runs respectively.

Earlier put into bat first, Quetta Gladiators scored 133 runs losing all their wickets. Despite losing early wickets, they were lifted by the third-wicket partnership of 79 runs between English Kevin Pietersen and Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakarra as they contributed important 79 runs in their team’s total. Kevin Pietersen hammered 53 runs with the help of two towering sixes and five fours while Sangakarra gathered 37 hitting six fours. The other major scorer for Quetta was M Nawaz who slammed 20 runs hitting two sixes and one four. No other batmen of Quetta could reach double figures.

Left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz bowled impressively and grabbed 3-17 while Shaun Tait managed to bag 2-23. Hassan Ali, Mohammad Asghar, captain Afridi and Darren Sammy chipped in with one wicket each.

Due to Friday, local holiday in the UAE, there was a huge crowd in and outside the stadium. Those, who succeeded in entering the stadium, were considering the lucky ones while those, waiting outside the stadium, were trying their best to throng the stadium and witness their heroes live in action in front of them.
