Bail plea of doctor linked to kidney scam rejected

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday dismissed bail petition of Lahore General Hospital’s Assistant Professor Dr Fawad Mumtaz, who is allegedly involved in illegal business of kidney transplant.

The doctor’s counsel said that Dr Fawad was kept in jail despite the fact that he had nothing to do with the scandal. He pleaded to the court to order his release. However, a law officer opposed his bail, saying that Dr Fawad was main suspect in the scam and used to get huge amounts for kidney transplants. The law officer said that he also used a ‘benami account’ for money deals.

After hearing arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali turned down his bail plea.  On Jan 7, 2017, an additional district & sessions judge dismissed bail petition of a woman involved in illegal organ-transplant scandal.  The prosecution told the court that suspect Safia was a facilitator of doctors involved in the illegal transplant of kidney and other human organs.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested the suspect on the information of prime suspects Dr Fawad Mumtaz, Dr Altamash Kharal, Umar Draz and Muhammad Shahzad.  The agency had arrested prime suspects during a raid on a house in EME Society, Thokar Niaz Beg when they were allegedly transplanting kidneys to some foreigners.
