LAHORE-President Asif Ali Zardari has exempted Shahdara residents from payment of toll tax. An announcement to this effect was made by Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer while talking to the media here at the Governors House on Tuesday. The governor said the President had taken the decision on an appeal of people of the area. He further told that President Zardari had also directed authorities to shift the toll plaza outside the City at the earliest to save the people from inconvenience. Terming the toll tax a Jagga tax, being charged from Shahdara residents, Taseer said people who had NICs would be eligible to avail this facility. Salmaan Taseer said that PPP leaders, Samiullah Khan and Asif Hashmi had promised with the people during electioneering that toll tax at the Shahdara toll plaza would be abolished when PPP came to power. Now, keeping in view peoples longstanding demand, the President of Pakistan, has decided to withdraw the tax from Tuesday, the governor announced, adding that it was a gift from a popular president for the people of Shahdra. The governor said that president would continue the process of presenting gifts to the people of Pakistan in different forms. PPP leaders, Samiullah Khan, Asif Hashmi, Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar, Farooq Ghurki, Hafeez Malik and others were also present on the occasion. DCO seeks report on land mafia District Coordination Officer (DCO) Lahore, Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta has directed all the district revenue officers to present a complete report regarding land grabbing mafias illegal occupation of public, private and graveyard lands. DCO Lahore in the light of the Supreme Court of Pakistans directions also ordered the revenue officers to prepare a detailed report about illegal occupants of historical buildings, City gates and encroachments, said a press statement issued on Tuesday. He further directed that difference between the urban and rural lands fees should be cleared through performas. Bhutta directed for appointing a focal person in all the areas fall under the District Lahore to complete the revenue record. DCO Lahore also directed to form a checklist for maintaining the record of applications for lands and its related affairs.
