GILGIT  - Dozens of families in Naltar near Gilgit are at risk of being washed away as cracks which appeared in the walls of a power plant’s reservoir upstream have widened, local residents said.

There are visible cracks in the walls which pose a serious threat to the local population. Water leaking out of the power plants reservoir has entered the nearby houses and the local population has started shifting to safer places owing to the danger of being washed away.

The locals have formed several committees of youths who are keeping an eye on the situation round the clock and making strategy accordingly.

Residents said that have been observing the situation with growing apprehension. They said the project which has been completed by using substandard material, poses threat to 110 houses situated nearby. They demanded of the government to take immediate notice of the matter.   The hydel power project was built in 2008 during Musharraf’s govt; construction was completed in four years. It is the largest hydro power plant in Gilgit-Baltistan. A Chinese firm worked on its construction under the supervision of the Water and Power Department.
