MULTAN - Two foreign aid workers were kidnapped by four unidentified armed men here from Qasim Bela area on Thursday evening.  The abducted workers were identified as Burnd, a German national, and Giovanni, an Italian.

Both of them worked for a German NGO Welt hunger hilfe (WHH) that was executing a rehabilitation project in flood-hit areas of South Punjab.  Police sources confirmed the incident, saying a big search drive was launched to trace the kidnappers. ‘Entire City is cordoned off and cops are deployed at all exit and entry points of Multan to prevent the kidnappers from taking the hostages out of the City area’, sources added.

The abducted NGO workers were living in a rental house in Western Fort Colony in precincts of Cantt police station.

Police sources said that as soon as the foreigners arrived from flood-hit areas, four armed men riding a white car suddenly approached them and held them hostage at gun-point.

The armed men also tied up a security guard, who was on duty at the spot, and ordered the foreigners to change their clothes.

‘They were asked to put off their Western dresses and wear shalwar kameez given to them by the kidnappers’, sources added.

It is suspected that the kidnappers belonged to any extremist outfit, though no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping so far.
