ISLAMABAD  - Former finance minister Sartaj Aziz has said that resolution of the judicial issue and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N)'s rejoining of the federal cabinet would give a signal of political stability and help improve the present economic situation in the country. He was commenting on a question that how economic imbalances can be reduced? Talking to Voice of America (VoA) he said markets would not regain the confidence, if political situation in the country remains uncertain. He underlined the need of increasing exports and reduction in the non-development budget to decrease the fiscal deficit. Besides, agriculture sector must be given due attention to have bumper crops next year to become self-sufficient in food. This would help control food inflation and improve the country's exports, he added. Sartaj Aziz said uncertainty at political level due to PML-N's separation from the federal cabinet and prevailing law and order situation in FATA also played role in affecting economic situation in the country. To a question, he said the incumbent government has inherited the present economic situation and problems from the previous government. Meanwhile, former Finance Minister, Sartaj Aziz while terming the export target in new trade policy as achievable on Saturday said that trade deficit may increase during the current fiscal. Talking to PTV, the former finance minister said that some steps in the new policy are positive but overall the targets are not enough. He suggested for some major steps to curtail the imports saying vis a vis the constant increasing trends in oil prices in international market the balance of trade would get disturbed and the deficit would go very high. Endorsing the India specific initiative in new trade policy he said in the long run they would prove beneficial. He however realized the need for the solution of bilateral disputes including the issue of Kashmir between India and Pakistan to ensure the continuity of trade relations between the two countries. Sartaj Aziz said, since the efforts are being made for bumper product of major agriculture crops, the sector may provide strength to country's economy.
